Samsung Omnia II SCH-i920 – Gives You Everything with Beauty and Speed

Recently joined Verizon’s lineup is the Samsung Omnia II SCH-i920, a Windows Mobile smartphone that boasts a large and brilliant AMOLED touch-sensitive screen. It has a revamped user interface, great customization options and robust multimedia features combined in a candy-bar design, making it a worthy upgrade over the original Omnia.

Dominating the front is a wide 3.7-inch (800x480 WVGA) touchscreen that uses the AMOLED technology for sharp and bright imagery. The screen works with Samsung’s enhanced user interface TouchWiz 2.0, which offers new widgets like Facebook and Bing to give you more customization options. Also, the Omnia II features the 3D cube interface found on the Behold II, which lets you organize your favorite multimedia applications for quick access.

Running on Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional, the new Omnia comes packed with two new services: Microsoft’s My Phone backup service and Windows Marketplace for Mobile. Naturally, the device provides the full Office Mobile suite, giving you the ability to access to and edit MS Office documents. In addition, it offers a rich web browsing experience with the updated Internet Explorer Mobile. The Opera Mobile 9.5 browser with tabbed browsing and zooming functions is onboard as well.

E-mail and messaging capabilities of the Omnia II are similar to its predecessor. Apart from support for Microsoft’s Direct Push Technology, it offers Verizon Mobile Email for access to your POP3 and IMAP accounts. You can use SMS, MMS and instant messaging through AIM, Windows Live Messenger or Yahoo Messenger.

Typing is a breeze using the onscreen QWERTY keyboard with Swype, an innovative entry method that is currently only featured on the Omnia II. It allows you to drag your finger across the screen to spell out a word without lifting your finger. You can also choose to type in the traditional way on the portrait or landscape keyboard.

As usual, Verizon throws in an array of multimedia services to the phone, including V CAST Music with Rhapsody, Video on Demand and Song ID. It also supports Visual Voice Mail and VZ Navigator for real-time navigation using the built-in GPS.

The Omnia II sports with a 5.0-megapixel camera with auto-focus and 3x digital zoom, along with DVD-like (480p) video recording and playback capabilities. Like its sibling, the new Omnia’s media player supports a wide selection of audio and video formats, including DivX and Xvid movie files. It also comes with a FM radio tuner and TV-out function.

Other advanced characteristics of the Omnia II include Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth 2.0, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a micro-USB port, 8GB internal user memory plus a microSD card slot that accommodates up to 16GB. The handset measures 4.69" by 2.35" by 0.52" and weighs 4.76 ounces.

The Samsung Omnia II is no doubt a powerful and sophisticated device packed with both business and entertainment goodies. It is therefore highly recommended for Windows Mobile fans or users who have been looking forward to an upgrade from the original Omnia.
