Innovative Ways to Charge Up Your Cell Phone Battery

Handset manufacturers have long been trying to come up with environmentally friendly methods to generate electricity to reduce harmful effects on the environment – using solar power is one of the options. And now, designers have proposed two revolutionary ways that can be listed in the green category:

Coca-Cola powered handset
Daizi Zheng, a UK-based Chinese designer has created an ecologically friendly concept phone for Finnish handset giant Nokia. Instead of using traditional batteries, the concept phone uses soft drinks to generate electricity from carbohydrates.

Through his research, Zheng discovered that Coca-Cola and other sugar-based drinks can be used as an alternative power source for mobile handsets. By adding enzymes as the catalyst to a pack of sugary drink, the bio battery can generate water and oxygen while the battery dies out. According to Zheng, a single full charge of the bio battery can keep the handset running three to four times longer than a lithium-ion battery.

The new form of battery is fully biodegradable, and is much easier to recharge: just pour more sweet fuel into the device!

Spin your finger to juice up your phone
If this new battery concept designed by Song Teaho and Hyejin Lee becomes real, it is probably the most unique way of recharging cell phones.

The concept works similar to those wind-up gadgets that are charged by rotating a crank. Whenever your phone runs out of juice, remove the battery from the back and give it some quick spins with your index finger, then you can enjoy extra talk time. No electrical source is required – it is all natural and simply powered by your finger.

The designers estimate that 130 revolutions will provide about 2 minutes of talk time or 25 minutes of standby time. At this rate, it would be quite time consuming to fully recharge your handset. But at least, the battery will come in handy when you need to send out an urgent email or make an emergency call.

These two concepts would be a breakthrough in mobile charging technology if they can actually work in practice. Until then, you may want to carry an extra battery pack, travel charger or car charger to make sure your device will not die out in the middle of the day!
