Nexus One – the Android-based “Superphone” from the Search Giant

Google has finally unveiled its first branded smartphone – the Nexus One. Developed together by Google and HTC, the Nexus One represents a perfect combination of design and innovation, boasting a brilliant display, a powerful processor, enhanced voice capabilities, noise cancellation technology and a load of attractive features, which will deliver a unique mobile experience to consumers.

Running the latest Android 2.1 version, the Nexus One brings some enhancements to the user interface. There are five home screens for you to customize with widgets. Users can also change the background image with different animated wallpapers that react to your touch and music. Equipped with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, everything responds and runs blazingly fast on the device.

The updated OS also revamped the voice search feature. Other than text searches, every text entry field is voice-enabled, which means you can populate any text field in the user interface by talking.

Another main attraction of the device is its 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED display with 480x800-pixel resolution, which offers vivid imagery and high touch responsiveness. It works with a proximity sensor, an ambient light sensor and an accelerometer. Below the screen are four buttons and a trackball. The trackball also acts as a tri-color notification light, which flashes when new emails, chats or text messages arrive.

Like other Android phones, the messaging options on the Nexus One are extensive. Apart from Gmail, it supports Microsoft Exchange and POP3 / IMAP4 accounts such as Yahoo, Hotmail and Windows Live. Text messaging, multimedia messaging and instant messaging like Google Talk are onboard. Other Google services integrated into the device include Google Calender, Google Maps, YouTube, and Google Search (with voice).

Moreover, the phone comes preloaded with Car Home, an application that offers voice search, turn-by-turn voice directions and more. You can download a variety of applications from the Android Market and store them on the 512MB of flash memory. The microSD memory card slot supports up to 32GB of storage expansion.

The Nexus One boasts a 5-megapixel camera with auto focus, 2X digital zoom, LED flash and geo-tagging capabilities. The built-in music player is compatible with various audio and video formats, including AAC, WAV, WMA, MP3, MP4 and M4V. Moreover, there is a webkit browser that supports flash-based web pages and JavaScript.

Other features on the phone include a G-sensor, digital compass, 3.5mm audio jack, micro-USB port, full-duplex microphone, stereo Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. The smartphone has a slim, compact and attractive design, measuring 4.69 by 2.35 by 0.45 inches and weighing 4.59 ounces.

Fully packed with amazing hardware and software, the Nexus One is a solid addition to Android’s portfolio and a nice competitive offer to the iPhone. The smartphone is now available through Google’s website for $529 without any contract, or for $179.99 with a 2-year service plan with T-Mobile USA.
