Palm Pre Plus – Fast, Versatile and Full-featured

Verizon Wireless has brought to its subscribers another powerful smartphone, the Palm Pre Plus, an enhanced version of the Pre. The new device shares a number of features with the original, but boasts some improvements to make it a more well-balanced device for messaging lovers.

To begin with, there are a few changes in the design. The full QWERTY keyboard that slides out vertically now has bigger keys for easier typing. The 3.1-inch multi-touch screen with 320x480-pixel resolution remains the same, but the home button below the display is now replaced by a touch area. The Pre Plus weighs 4.89 ounces and measures 2.3" by 3.9 by 0.67", which is very similar to the Pre.

Needless to say, running Palm’s WebOS operating system, the Pre Plus offers the useful multitask function, allowing users to run multiple applications simultaneously. You can flit between different items, such as music playlist, messaging box and applications, without having to close any of them first.

Like the Pre, the Pre Plus uses Synergy to organize messaging and social networking information into one integrated view. Messages from your personal and work email, text and multimedia messaging, instant messaging, as well as social networking sites are categorized by contact for easy viewing. The phone supports Microsoft Exchange email with Direct Push Technology, plus POP3/IMAP email accounts such as Yahoo Mail, Gmail and Hotmail.

As for the multimedia capabilities, the Pre Plus plays a range of audio and video formats like MP3, AAC, WAV and MPEG-4. You can download more music through the built-in Amazon MP3 store application. With support for 3D game play, users can also download 3D games from Palm App Catalog. On the downside, the LED flash camera is downgraded to 3.0 megapixels and it still lacks video recording capability.

The Pre Plus comes with a full HTML web browser, which connects to the Internet through Wi-Fi or Verizon’s 3G network. Moreover, it comes with a Google Maps application and VZ navigator that offers text-to-speech driving directions.

Another notable upgrade on the Pre Plus is the 16GB memory storage, which is twice as much as its sibling. Other hardware and software features include a 3.5mm headset jack, accelerometer, ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, stereo Bluetooth, USB mass storage and Wi-Fi router functionality for up to five devices using Palm mobile hotspot.

Although the Pre Plus is not a major overhaul, it is still a nice addition to Verizon’s array of versatile smartphones. Folks who love messaging and social networking will certainly enjoy the fluid experience offered by Palm’s intuitive platform.
