Released for Verizon Wireless, the Motorola Droid 2 and Droid X are two powerful Android devices with their design and features based upon the original Droid. The two share some traits, yet they boast distinctive elements that cater to users with different tastes and preferences.
Design
The two Droids do not have much in common when it comes to their look. While the Droid X retains the candy bar design of the original, the Droid 2 is a slider phone equipped with a physical QWERTY keyboard. At 5.02" high by 2.57" wide by 0.39" deep, the former is much taller and wider than the latter (4.58" x 2.38" x 0.54"), but weighs nearly 0.5 ounces less without the keyboard.
Display & Keyboard
With a more compact form factor, the Droid 2 has a smaller 3.7" screen display compared to the Droid X's 4.3" one. They employ the same capacitive touch technology and offer 480x854-pixel resolution. Both of them let you type on their virtual Android and Swype keyboards, but those who don't want to rely solely on touchscreens will like Droid 2's inclusion of an actual keyboard as an additional input option.
Operating system
In terms of the OS, the Droid 2 outmatches the Droid X as it runs the latest Android 2.2 Froyo software. Fortunately, an upgrade is expected to arrive to replace Android 2.1 on the Droid X in late summer, meaning users of both devices will be enjoying the same platform experience very soon.

Web Browsing
Both Droids come with the Android Webkit HTML5-based browser, but the Droid 2 has the advantage with support for Adobe Flash Player 10.1. But again, the Droid X will get this feature when it is upgraded to Android 2.2.

Camera & Camcorder
The Droid X's 8-megapixel camera trumps the Droid 2's 5-megapixel shooter, though both of them integrate dual-LED flash, auto-focus and digital zoom. As for video capturing, the former supports HD-quality (1280 x 720p resolution) videos, while the other offers DVD-quality (720x480 resolution) video recording capabilities.
Memory
The two Droids have the same storage capacity: 8GB internal memory and up to 32GB expandable memory via microSD memory card. However, the Droid X comes with a 16GB microSD card, which is twice as much as the Droid 2's.

Connectivity
The Droids share the same features in the connectivity department. Apart from 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 and DLNA support, they also serve as a 3G mobile hotspot for up to five Wi-Fi-capable devices.

Other Features
Both devices come with a 3.5mm headset jack, a micro-USB port, a proximity sensor, an ambient light sensor and an eCompass. But with a micro HDMI port, the Droid X also allows you to share media contents with others by connecting to a compatible HDTV.

While the Droid 2 is more portable and ideal for text messaging lovers who prefer typing on an actual keyboard, the Droid X excels in the area of multimedia with a larger screen and a better camera/camcorder. With their own strengths and appealing characteristics, the two Motorola smartphones are neck and neck in performance and functionality, and can both be considered as top-notch offerings.
