The Android-powered Samsung Galaxy S handsets have only arrived the United States for one and a half months, but they have already proved a great hit among smartphone users. According to the company's press release, more than 1 million units were sold across the country since their launch in mid July.
The impressive sales figure was contributed by the two released variants, the Samsung Vibrant from T-Mobile and the Samsung Captivate from AT&T. The Samsung Epic 4G, a Sprint version equipped with a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard, went on sale on August 31, just after the 1-million shipment announcement. The Galaxy S is also expected to be available via Verizon Wireless (as the Samsung Fascinate), U.S. Cellular and Cellular South later this fall, which means a total of six carriers will be offering the device.
Samsung attributed the instant success of the Galaxy S line up to the multi-carrier strategy it employs to reach more U.S. consumers. Besides, it pointed out that their intensive marketing campaign via print, online social networks, cinemas and several major TV networks is also playing a vital role in promoting the phones and attracting customers.
Despite having different names given by their wireless carriers, the four Galaxy S versions share some common features and functions, such as a 4-inch Super AMOLED screen display, a 1GHz processor, a 5-megapixel camera and Wi-Fi connectivity. They all run on Google's Android 2.1 (Éclair) operating system and will be upgradable to version 2.2 (Froyo), which is currently found on the Motorola Droid 2.
With the upcoming availability of the Galaxy S smartphones on all major U.S. carriers, one could expect that the devices will continue to sell briskly at least for the next few months. Riding this momentum, it won't be difficult for Samsung to achieve its plan of shipping 10 million units worldwide.
