Google Nexus One Gets Multi-touch and Software Updates

Google announced an over-the-air software update for its Nexus One smartphone, bringing the much awaited multi-touch support, 3G improvement and some other enhanced software features to users.

The lack of multi-touch functionality had been criticized as one of the weaknesses of the Nexus One. The update enables a pinch-to-zoom mechanism, a feature popularized by Apple’s iPhone, for the phone’s wireless web browser, photo gallery and Google Maps applications.

Still, most of the Android based devices, such as the Motorola DROID and the T-Mobile G1, still lack the multi-touch zooming capabilities on the device’s interface. The Nexus One and the HTC DROID Eris are the few ones that include the feature.

The update also includes several new features. Google Goggles, an application that lets you snap a picture with the phone’s camera and use that picture to search the web, is preloaded on the Nexus One. Besides, Google Maps is updated to version 3.4. It now allows you to synchronize "starred items" between your computer and phone, provides search suggestions based on your search history, and offers a driver-friendly night mode for better map viewing when driving at night.

Last but not the least, Google added a general fix to address the connectivity problem with T-Mobile USA’s 3G network that some users have been experiencing. T-Mobile is the sole carrier subsidizing the Nexus One for the moment, but Verizon Wireless said it would also start offering the device in this spring.

The search giant has already started to roll out the update. Owners of the Nexus One will receive a notification when the update arrives. All you have to do is to download and install it, and you will be able to enjoy the above new goodies.
