Pantech Slate C530 – A Budget Choice for Text Messaging

Unlike Pantech’s other high-end messaging devices, the Pantech Slate C530 for AT&T is all about the basics. It is a simple, functional and inexpensive phone with a sole focus on text messaging, targeting those who want nothing more than quick and easy text and email composition.

As you can tell from the name, the Slate is a slab-style handset with a full QWERTY keyboard. Touted as the thinnest messaging device at the time of its release, it measures only 0.39" deep by 4.23" high by 2.5" wide. It is also very lightweight and pocket-friendly at a mere 3.2 ounces. The phone sports a 2.2-inch LCD screen that supports 262k colors and 176x220-pixel resolution.

With a spacious and comfortable keyboard, the Slate is perfect for typing up SMS, EMS and MMS messages. Though there is no support for threaded messaging, you can send business card information as a multimedia message. Instant messaging fans will be happy to know that the phone comes with support for three IM services: AIM, Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger. You can also stay connected via email as the Slate also includes mobile email options for AOL, Yahoo, Hotmail, BellSouth and more.

The Slate has no quick access to social networking sites, but you can use the WAP web browser to connect to the communities. Other than that, you get an integrated 1.3-megapixel camera with 2x zoom for taking photos and recording videos. There is a dedicated camera key on the right spine of the phone.

Unfortunately, the Slate only offers 20MB of internal memory and there is no microSD slot for memory expansion. The phone book stores up to 600 entries. In addition, the handset packs stereo Bluetooth support, MP3 ringtone support, a speakerphone, a voice-memo recorder and so on.

Although the Pantech Slate C530 does not have advanced features or a fancy-looking design, it is a good performer in terms of texting by integrating a decent set of messaging options into a slim frame.
