Motorola DROID X – The New King of Android’s Lineup

Motorola has brought Android fans a sibling of its successful Motorola DROID released last year. The new Motorola DROID X, a slimmed-down successor without a slide-out keyboard but a giant screen, a better camera and enhanced multimedia capabilities, is now available in the U.S. through Verizon Wireless.

The most noticeable upgrade of the DROID X is its 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen (480 x 854 pixels), which is 0.6 inches larger than the DROID's. Despite the absence of a physical keyboard, the handset offers two on-screen ones: a standard keyboard and a Swype keyboard. Like the original, it supports pinch-to-zoom gestures and is built in with a proximity sensor, an ambient light sensor and an accelerometer. At 5.02" high by 2.58" wide by 0.39" deep and 5.47 ounces, the DROID X is taller, yet lighter and thinner than its predecessor.
The phone runs on Google's Android OS 2.1 and will be upgraded to 2.2 later this summer with more new features, such as Adobe Flash Player 10.1. Motorola also incorporated some refined MOTOBLUR features into the user interface. For example, with MOTOBLUR social networking aggregation, Facebook and Twitter feeds can be integrated to the home screen. You can also customize seven different panels with shortcuts and both Motorola and Android widgets.

As an Android device, the DOIRD X features a bunch of Google's mobile services, including Google Talk, Gmail, Google Maps with Navigation and Street View, Google Search by Voice, Google Calendar, Google Contact Sync, YouTube and access to Android Market. Apart from these, there are other applications like Skype Mobile, Blockbuster and VCast Video. The phone also has support for POP3/IMAP email accounts, Microsoft Exchange, and text and multimedia messaging with threaded chat view.

The DROID X ships with some strong multimedia elements as well. Its camera/ camcorder received a big boost from 5 megapixels to 8 megapixels. It supports dual-LED flash, autofocus, digital zoom and face detection, and is capable of capturing 720p high-definition videos. Equipped with DLNA support and an HDMI port, the handset can be connected to your TV or computer to display HD content. You also get an Android Media Player and an Android HTML Webkit browser. All media files can be saved in the 8GB built-in memory and an additional microSD card up to 32GB.

Additionally, the phone is integrated with stereo Bluetooth, turn-by-turn GPS, eCompass, speech recognition, a 3.5mm headset jack and a speakerphone. It also serves as a 3G mobile hotspot for up to five Wi-Fi-capable devices.

The Motorola DROID X is an excellent device for recording and watching videos, surfing the Internet, social networking, playing games and more. It is no doubt a worthy follow-up to the original and a worthy opponent in the competitive smartphone landscape.
