Samsung Galaxy S Sales Hit 10-Million Mark

Samsung has officially announced that more than 10 million Galaxy S smartphones were sold to customers in just seven months of the debut, achieving its 2010 sales target for the popular Android-running devices.

While the sales number is impressive, it is not that surprising as the Galaxy S series has been selling briskly right after it was launched in June 2010. Samsung has managed to ship 1 million units in mid-July and by October, the sales has reached its 5-million milestone. With over 1.4 million units sold consistently per month, the Galaxy S lineup "demonstrates the consumer demand for relevant, empowering mobile experiences", said the South Korean company.

Breaking down the 10-million sales, over 4 millions were contributed by the North American market, around 2.5 millions by Europe, 2 millions by South Korea, and the rest came from across the world. Currently, the Galaxy S series is carried by nearly 100 mobile operators globally as different variants. In the United States, it is available from all four major carriers, including the Captivate for AT&T, the Fascinate for Verizon, the Vibrant for T-Mobile and the Epic 4G for Sprint.

'With the 10 million sales of the Galaxy S, Samsung Electronics has clearly become a leading smartphone maker,' the company claimed in a statement.

Samsung, the second-largest handset manufacturer, said in a recent announcement that it aims to snatch Nokia's top position in three years' time. According to Bloomberg, the company intends to double its smartphone sales in 2011 with the Galaxy S series and the just arrived Nexus S smartphone. The handset maker also said it plans to challenge Apple's iPod with the "Galaxy Player," a digital media device derived from the Galaxy S smartphones.

Of course, it will take more than successful smartphone sales to outpace Nokia, since the trump card of the leading phone manufacturer is its domination in the feature phone market. Samsung will have to step up its lower-end handset effort as well to reach the top.
